Have a safe and enjoyable Fat Tuesday!

2/26/2006

The minutes to the February tennis association meeting have been posted.

2/25/2006

A new submission has been made concerning the lake.  It is worth a look.

2/25/2006

This is in response to the Director comment that it is more important for the new board to address the actions of the old board than to monitor it's own actions.  HELLO The job of the new board is to monitor it's own actions for the benefit of Lake Forest not to engage in pointless acts of revenge at the past board.  By the way, I recently read something that is very appropriate to this situation.  One can never forgive the people that one has wronged. Of course the new board deeply resents the old board - the slate of five made and was elected on false accusations.  Now they have to live with it.  One never forgives those that they have wronged.

2/24/2006

Submission from a director

After a great deal of consideration and input, there are board members who favor a single general manager position. This issue will likely be revisited very soon. These rumors of board members continually overstepping their bounds are out of sync with what is truly going on. There are issues that do need attention in the way the LFPOA has been operated in the past.  It is very likely that in the midst of setting board policy on operations, there is a misinterpretation of inquiries and information requests.

Thank you for that update.  It is very encouraging to hear that the management situation may be re-evaluated.  It is also likely, as yesterday's submission suggested, that some directors may not be aware of what some of their associates are doing around the club.

2/23/2006

Seems the LFPOA Board of Directors are insistent upon overstepping their boundaries when it comes to giving direct orders to LFPOA employees.  I noticed the submission related to the choice to split the job of general manager and believe this to be yet another device for micromanagement from the board.  As a matter of good form, I try not to believe rumors unless they are founded but I would venture to say that if you receive the same "rumor" from numerous sources, perhaps it should be stated for public record.  Besides, I'm not altogether sure that all members of the board are aware of the things that would seem to be individualized more than against the entire board.  For instance, the submission by Debbie Waite suggests that she is in charge of the yacht club, when the rumors are that the only thing she is in control of is Toni Fassbender.  Rumor has it that when Debbie speaks, Toni listens..... shame too because sometimes Toni ends up with the proverbial egg on her face. Apparently, Ms. Fassbender, along with Henry, likes to micromanage and have a tendency to give orders.  I read in the Spectrum where there is a new man helping in maintaining the place, but I also heard through a different grapevine that this man and the old one were told that Ms. Fassbender apparently is making demands that this particular staff isn't going fast enough. I had one person tell me that heads would roll if her items weren't taken care of in the time she wanted them to be.  Webmaster, didn't you say there was only one man (I guess now two) to take care of all the buildings at LFPOA?  I also heard that credit is taken by people that aren't doing anything and blame is laid on those that don't give in and suck up to the board. I even heard that Henry likes to give the order to employees and then talk to Steve.  What about the manager?  Where is he when the board makes demands?  If the board is successful in separating the job of general manager then there will no doubt be problems with who is in charge of what?  And does anyone know who they are going to make manager?  Steve seems like the most likely choice but I can't see anyone in the administration department as experienced or non biased enough to be able to manage anything.  My vote would be to bring in some one that has no connection to any of the board and / or the employees so they could be totally loyal to what matters, making the association the best it can be.  I'm not sure how everyone else feels but I bet this October's meeting will be interesting.  As for all the secrets going on:  I think that the more the board does out of the public eye, the more the membership and probably employees will think that they are against the team instead of with it.  If the board is truly working for a better place then there shouldn't be anything that they need to keep in secret.  Oh well, everyone has an opinion.

I believe that Debbie is the employee considered the to be the F & B Director.  Perhaps because F & B is such a major part of the Yacht Club, Toni, as chair of the Yacht Club & Marina committee, would have to get information from Debbie.  I agree that does not mean she should be issuing instructions to anyone.  The persistent rumors of director micro-management and employee disillusionment, which may not necessarily be related, are disturbing.

2/22/2006

Well, the high-rise ordinance was tabled.  It's really difficult to please everyone.

2/21/2006

I was looking over the packet for last night's City Council meeting and apparently revenues are up these days because they have found they have an excess.  The following ordinance was to be voted on last night.  What is interesting is that $500,000 is supposed to go to street paving/resurfacing.  Do you think any of that will go to Lake Forest streets?  Let's hope most of it does.  How far can a half a million dollars go toward paving a street?

ORDINANCE 2006- 11

Would you like to see the joint resolution for the watershed study?  If it is a joint resolution, shouldn't there be signatures of representatives of the other parties?  Now, please clarify this for the readers.  Exactly what does this resolution say that the City of Daphne plans to do?  How many times do you count the mention of Lake Forest and its lake in that resolution?

2/21/2006

Speaking of the City Council, I was looking through the ordinance on high-rise requirements that was also voted on last night.  I had to read through twenty-something pages of gibberish just to find the part that said the maximum height is 200 feet.  How does it matter anyway?  200 feet or 250 feet, what difference does it make?

Capt Bilge Rides Again!!!

2/19/2006

First let me thank you for removing the ugly blue and smelly dumpster from the Ridgewood Swimming Pool area. Second, when will the tin roof above the gazebo be repaired? It was damaged in Hurricane Ivan, and since this time it is missing part of it's roof. BTW, We would not mind paying for the use of the pool, if a) it would not close before my husband returns from work, b) if that would insure that it is not overcrowded and c) fewer people would dump their trash out of the cars before they leave, so it blows in our yard and we have to clean it up.  Mind you, the dumpster did not help.  No one walked the few steps to put trash in the dumpster. They just open the car door and drop the ashes, cups, bags, etc.  Please charge a nice fee for the pool on Ridgewood and make the others free pools. Maybe you can use the money to offset the losses in Food Services.

2/19/2006

Last year the words of the year were " Point of order, Point of order". This year is the Year of Study.  Must of heard "study" concerning the lake 20 times at the board meeting.  Never mind that it's been "studied" to the point that it's nearly filled up with silt. One interesting item I heard was that now they want to get the Corp of Engineers involved in "studying" putting in an overflow spillway. Hope the Corp does a better job than they did on the levies on New Orleans?  Supposed to be big meeting in March with all the politicians, etc.  Guess what, it's an election year, meaning lots of empty promises.

Money maker of the year idea: Breakfast: sold 9 on Friday and 9 on Saturday. Had approx. 60 at Valentines Day dance. That seems quite low compared to years past? Understand that Ed Kirby and wife was the only board member in attendance?

Apparently the "grapevine" had it right, the recently appointed board member was not present.  The board went into "Executive Session" and appointed Willie Robison to the board.  No mention during the meeting why Ms. Lieb didn't accept or resigned the position?

There was no discussion or report on the "retreat" to Heron Lakes by the board other than when asked, it didn't cost Lake Forest anything, and Steve J interjected that it was an "educational seminar".

They did establish a "Scholarship Committee" with Cocke reluctantly accepting the chairmanship, and Moseley and Kirby as members.  No intention to hire a GM, and no indication on when the split jobs will be announced.

I must apologize to the first lady to address the board as I missed her name. She expressed her concern to the board about it's dealing with the mayor of Daphne. She had been to a meeting and apparently the mayor had not spoken well of Lake Forest when it was mentioned.  From the smirks of the directors (those facing the audience), she might as well have saved her breath.  Meaning to me they are dealing with the City and others without reporting those dealings to the LF membership.

Maybe "secrecy" should be the word of the year, between off property "retreats", numerous Executive Sessions, and unreported meetings with outside agencies seems there is lots going on in the shadows of secrecy?

The Spectrum omissions last issue was not Capt Bilge's fault, the Spectrum did or didn't do it.  Guess Captn Bilge can't read anything but "Souther Ease" so couldn't proof read the Spectrum before it was published.

Both the dry slips and wet slips are less than 100% rented?  Is that a result of the ill advised increase in user fees?  Food and beverage is now involved in negotiations with the food vendors to get lower costs?  Wonder what happened to the by-laws that direct the board to only set policy and direction to the GM, not get involved in the day to day operations?

Seems to this writer that everything on the agenda has been decided in private prior to the meetings, then the "slate of five" and Henry vote on their previously decided agenda?

Thank you so much for that report.  Last year, some of the the people who are presently in the leadership position of the board, were busily manipulating things under the banner of the "Improvement Committee".  It was reported numerous times that they were having "secret" meetings.  They even asked one board member, who attended a so called Improvement Committee meeting, to leave because she was not part of their inner group.  It was reported that Henry was very busy in the background orchestrating a group to bring the motion against the president at last year's annual meeting, secretly.  While the president was making his rebuttal to the charges, Henry was pressuring the chair to cut him off.  Apparently, he did not want the members to hear too many of the facts.  This Board of Directors with Henry in charge is now operating with a degree of secrecy that no other board has ever come close to matching.  They hold meetings pertaining to the lake without letting the membership know.  They held a "retreat" in secret.  The went into executive session to appoint a board member and hire an attorney.  Why do those two actions require a secret executive session?  Oh, by the way, rumor has it that Willie Robison is the new board member and Patrick Collins is the new attorney.  There's nothing wrong with either of these gentlemen, so why the secrecy?  They scrapped the working meeting.  Why?  Was that meeting too open?  It is becoming increasing clear that we have a couple people with a severe lack of character at the helm of Lake Forest.  The methodology is not new.  A couple of years ago Bob Underwood and John Deloney also had meetings with Faulkner State, while insisting that the president not be told about them.  Why?  Because the president always made sure the membership knew the facts.  When we have a board that likes to work in those smoke-filled rooms behind closed doors, the membership needs to be ever alert.  You may be surprised at what comes down the pike.

2/19/2006

I can tell you what happened at the board meeting. NOTHING!!

2/19/2006

Regarding the march calendar, It looks great, but I would add board meetings, improvement committee meetings, garden club, and womens club meetings.

Thanks.  Can anyone else think of some events that should be added?

2/19/2006

The association should build those catch basins while waiting for those studies to be completed.

That was the substance of the webmaster's recommendation on the lake discussion page.

2/19/2006

Everyone should read the Saturday Mobile Register editorial. Our local representative Davis showed his colors and lack of backbone in his voting record last week. Same politician the board is talking to about the Lake?

2/18/2006

There was a nice piece on the watershed issue today in the Mobile Register.  Deja Vu all over again.  It's great that all these entities are studying the problem.  Now, what does the actual owner of the lake intend to do?

2/18/2006

What happened at Thursday's Board meeting?  Have we lost interest?

2/18/2006

Check out the photos from Valentines under the Home Page Headlines

2/18/2006

There is some new design work on the Calendar of Events.  Check it out by scrolling down below February and looking at March.  Tell me what you think.

2/17/2006

The minutes for the December meeting have been posted under About Us > About LFPOA

2/17/2006

There is an announcement of golf tournament results on the Home Page. Also, check out the Garden Club announcement of their plant sale with Daphne High School

2/16/2006

Here is something for kids who enjoy chatrooms to consider.

2/16/2006

A new travel club has started at the Daphne Sr. center.  We had our first meeting last week. Some good trips will be available at a great price.  It is organized by Ms. Judy Jerkins and I have been on several of her trips through the South Alabama Travelers group in Foley over the past few years. We are lucky to have her in Daphne at our Sr. center.

2/16/2006

My father, Jim Richards is a french horn player with the Baldwin Pops and has played all his life, including professionally in his younger years.  We have people in Lake Forest with many talents none of us are aware of !!

2/15/2006

Had a wonderful time last night. Went to the Baldwin Pops Concert - the band is made up of community members from all walks of life drawn together by their love of music and the fact that somewhere along the way they learned to play an instrument. Many learned to play in high school and have held on to their clarinet, flute, trumpet, whatever. Their concerts are great and are well attended. Last night's concert was held at the community center in Fairhope and was packed - with only 2 or 3 seats left in the back. Couldn't help but notice that one of Lake For est's own, Carl Kauffman, was featured in a solo mallett quartet in the Freckle Rag - a big hit with the audience. Way to go, Baldwin County Band! Can't wait for the outdoor concerts on the Fairhope bluff in the summertime. Picnicing in the park with a fine view and great music provided by an outstanding community organization.

2/15/2006

What was on capt mikes website? Some of us could not see it.

Just some photos.  It was photo album, not a real website.  It was nice for family, but not of interest as far as a Lake Forest issue.  Apparently, another one has been submitted that features Mrs. Sager's art.  She seems to have some real talent.

2/14/2006

Capt Mike's website is no longer online.

2/14/2006

Don't forget today is Valentine's Day.  You don't want to end up in the dog house

2/14/2006

We just heard that the newly appointed director, Janet Lieb, has resigned from the Board of Directors

2/14/2006

The best relaxation with exercise I've had outside of the Rec Center is at the Country Club each Tuesday evening at 7pm. Line Dancing with Nancy and Bob Weibel as our teachers.  Introducing up to 10 different types of dances.  We are a mixed group!  Just $5 each evening!  I go and love it! (Get out of breath, just sit one out!)

2/13/2006

As Yacht Club Manager and the chef for Lake Forest, The Valentines social was a great success.  Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, the food and the music.  We had quite a few dancers and we were glad to see them enjoy themselves.  I enjoyed preparing the food and hope that a good time was had by all.  Hope to see MORE of our members at the shrimp and Crawfish boil (if the crawfish will come) but, if not we will have something for all of our members to enjoy.  Hope to see all of you soon.

Thanks again for your support.

Fondly,

Debbie Waite, Yacht Club Manager & Chef.

2/12/2006

After Kauffman's query about our new board member's qualifications and goals, we have heard NOTHING from the PRESIDENT, the BOARD, or MS LIEB.  If any responsible person were in that position I think they would be more than happy to provide the answers.  Why has there been no information?

Regarding the report from the Improvement Committee meeting of Moss' appointment of Capt. Bilge to be the voice of Lake Forest, it was a move of genius!  We all know that Moss cannot speak without putting his foot in his mouth.  Now he has Sager to be his mouth-piece he can be in denial when things are misspoken.  Real thinking there.  "Bless his heart."

I heard that the Board's "retreat" was held at Heron Lakes.  Did we pay for the use of their facilities, or did daddy's little girl's husband get it for free?  If we paid for the use, can the board explain why there is not space here to meet without being observed if that was their intention?  After all, the site of the old teen club is not being used!

2/12/2006

Capt Mike's, our communications guru, Web Page.  Nice photos.

2/12/2006

OK, here is the expansion of the flooding issue.

2/12/2006

In the report of the Improvement Committee meeting, it was stated that chairman Jim Moss wanted only positive comments and then went on to deride the former President.  I attended a meeting of the restructuring committee of Lake Forest two years ago and the then vice-president made the same comment and also went on to vilify the seated board and it's president.  Is Mr. Moss receiving his program from this sad individual?  I hope not, as many of us feel that he was behind the foolish articles in the lawn litter we received last year.

2/11/2006

We extended our deepest sympathy to Debbie Gee, her daughter Angie, and the rest of their family for the loss of Debbie's father this week.  Debbie is a member of our accounting staff and Angie works with Food & Beverage.

2/11/2006

There have been more reports on the Improvement Committee meeting last week.  There were about eight or nine realtors at the meeting and they spoke very enthusiastically about Lake Forest.  The main theme seemed to be "Lake Forest offers the best home value in the area."  That is something that you and I have known for a long time.  It is so nice to have our opinion validated by people in the business of selling homes.

2/11/2006

In regards to Carl's post a few days ago...I can tell you exactly why Lieb was appointed to fill the position and not Carl. It's because Carl is clearly overqualified. The Board members don't want to be dwarfed in categories such as education, intelligence, and common sense just to name a few. I also find myself amazed that Carl would want to serve this Board. You're a martyr Carl, good for you. I couldn't do it though, I have a low tolerance for stupid.

2/11/2006

This is an important submission from a director.

2/10/2006

A few comments if I may. We are transplanted northerners ... otherwise also known as "damned yankees" because we came and stayed. We take no offense at all at the "Southern-eze" and find the culture terrific as is the warmth and friendliness of our Lake Forest neighbors and friends. The "Southern or not..." link was a hoot!  Being retired Navy we have lived all over the world and there is no where that we would rather call home than Daphne and Lake Forest. My wife and I were both out of town prior to Katrina and hadn't been able to do anything to protect our house. I can't think of any place where we have lived, until here, where our neighbors would take the time and protect our property for us. Lastly, we have a home right on the lake. Our dock is surrounded by silt, lake grass and weeds. We are prepared to help in any way that we can to protect the lake.

And those of us who were born and raised in Alabama are glad to have you.  I thought the "Southern or not" was a hoot too.

2/10/2006

A director has contributed view of the lake situation.

2/10/2006

The only way to protest the "capt. Pontoon/Mike" writing experiments is to cancel the Spectrum delivery !! It doesn't cover club news or anything of importance. We can get all our information from this website concerning the board and club information. SO, CALL THE OFFICE AND TAKE YOUR NAME OFF THE SPECTRUM MAILING ! SURE THE LFPOA SAVES A FEW CENTS BUT, I SAVE MYSELF FROM THE SAGER DRIBBLE and a TRIP TO THE TRASH !

I wish you wouldn't do that.  You can ignore Sager's stuff.  He's just a temporary annoyance.

2/10/2006 - From a director

The director's "issue of such importance" was not the appointment of the new director. He was talking about action on the attorney. He was told that the meeting was properly noticed and, with a quorum, the board would conduct business.

Thank you for the correction.

2/10/2006

We seem to be hearing a great deal about negativism on this site from the Board of Directors.  At the Improvement Committee meeting the other night, Jim Moss started it off by saying that they were only going to speak positively about Lake Forest and then started a long tirade about how negative you and I are.  He referred to yours truly as the "disgruntled former president".  It's news to me!  I thought I was happy as a lark.  He then said that I had been tossed off the board by a 3 to 1 margin of the membership.  Really?  Let's see.  A couple of hundred people cast votes on that motion.  About that many walked out of the meeting because the motion was nonsense.  The vote went 119 to 83 and that was because the Henry's supporters had worked extra hard to bring in their troops.  There are almost 3000 members of the association.  Hmmm.  Somehow his numbers don't add up.  It is becoming increasingly clear that no one needs to point out the shortcomings of some of the directors.  They seem to be doing that very well by themselves. ;)

2/10/2006

I have another southernism for ole swabbie.  In the South one can heap almost any insult on a person without penalty by just adding one little phrase.  See if you can tell what I mean:

"You know, she's so skinny that if she turned sideways in a rain storm she wouldn't get wet.  Bless her heart."

"You know that ole' boy has got to be the dullest tool in the shed.  Bless his heart."

2/9/2006

Hi Capt. Mike,

Thought yo'all might want to use some of this stuff in future articles.  It seems to fit right into your bigoted opinion of people who live is this area.  Sincerely not a fan.

2/9/2006

Don't you just love it.  The new board has an agreement with local, state, and NATIONAL, political hacks to "study" the lake problem!  Not only will they "study" it, the "study" will not start until October - 8 months from now.  Next, the best part, the "study" will take 2 years.  Not only will the facetious five be out of office; the political hacks will probably be also.  Net result NOTHING HAPPENS FOR THREE YEARS!!!  This is the way politicians work - "study" it until public interest goes away.  Then do nothing

Several years ago a similar study was to be undertaken to find a solution to the problem and that solution might take ten years.  When I checked on the status of the study about a year later,  I was told that no one had followed through on it.  Sometime later the former mayor and I were blamed for somehow undermining the project for political reasons, which was nonsense.

I am grateful for any efforts on the part of anyone to solve the erosion problem that is damaging the Lake Forest lake.  I was recently told by State Representative Randy Davis that the Conservation Department was, indeed, going to do a watershed study.  However, in the next year we are probably going to see much more severe weather like we had last year.  The weather people in the know say the next several years will be ugly.  The people who live on the lake have reason to be worried.

2/9/2006

There were  some really good items  on web today.  It seems that the board is finally using this site to communicate since there is no other way

2/9/2006

Please, please, no more "southern eze" or whatever that was...if you are new here and are infatuated w/ Mardi Gras maybe writing about the history of this celebration and the tradition of 'fat tuesday' before Ash Wednesday and Lent would be interesting..to all....however, there is more to Mardi Gras than our writer seems to know.  And preaching to party from the pulpit before Lent, never happened!  Not in any church!

Last night Jim Moss, the Communication Chairman, announced at the Improvement committee meeting that Mike Sager was in charge of communications for the association.  I guess you better get used to his attempts at writing. ;)

2/8/2006

Mitch, I seldom disagree with you but you went too far this time.  Watching the Slate of Five is not even close to watching Professional Wrestling..  ''WRASSLIN HAS A PLAN''.

2/8/2006

Sorry, have to disagree with your comparison.  Professional wrestling is more honest!  They will admit it is all a gag.

2/8/2006

Please put the Women's Club meeting for 10 am on your calendar, it is always the third Thursday of each month through May. (the 16th) This Month we are celebrating Mardi Gras, everyone should dress accordingly, if they wish! Great refreshments guaranteed!

2/8/2006

Submission received from a director.  Starts discussion with statement about the appointment of new director.

I sent a letter to all the board members and Steve that I could not attend and I requested that on an issue of such importance, that ALL board members must be present. They obviously had already counted 5 for the slate of 5 and one for Henry. The rest of the board is not important.  I am going to call a special meeting, if I can get another board member to support it. The D'Olive Committee filed a complaint with ADEM for the damage to Toms Cove, THE 4th such complaint.  Henry refused to file a complaint for the association to protect the association's property, specifically the lake or to protect the property of the members that live on the lake.  The last rain was worse and The D'Olive Committee is filing the 5th complaint and that is going to be the subject of the special meeting, to let Henry and John explain why they do not wish to protect the Lake by filing a complaint with ADEM to protect the Lake, which is LFPOA Property.

2/8/2006

I think the Women's Club and Garden Club, also any other club who did not get their publication in the Spectrum this month, although submitted timely, should send them to you. There actually is no other web site for Lake Forest.  Let's keep it together, if these clubs are not recognized (WC&GC) for sure will fall apart.  Recognition is one important key to volunteerism.  And all of these clubs have volunteers to lead them.  The board needs to realize that, not publishing their articles was a direct slap in the face.  Do we have excuses from Jim Moss?  Does he have a computer now and learned to send and receive e mails?  The last meeting was out around 10pm; because of no working meeting, kind of late for all, don't you think?  How crazy is this board becoming?

2/8/2006

I would appreciate it very much if the garden club would submit information on this website about plantings. Like when to plant, what to plant, when to prune, etc. This would be very useful for all of us. Thank you

2/8/2006

This is from a director.

The new website, due in mid February, will contain e-mail opportunities to board members and likely key staff. The board is interested in hearing from the members suggestions, complaints, or thoughtful input about ways to better the community

2/8/2006

This is from a director.

An elementary school in the neighborhood? That was an interesting article for many reasons. It should be stated that the LFPOA BOD has not been involved in any discussion with the school board or Friday Construction concerning such activity. Like many of you, it was first heard about by reading the article. I would think that there is some protection for our neighborhood in the way of restrictions on property owned by Friday. That will be studied in the coming days.

There are covenants. The area is zoned a for single family homes.  However, City government can probably overcome those obstacles.  Another thing to consider is the sales contract with the association.  The association would be giving up the maintenance fees for each quarter acre used for the project.  But, it would be nice for the kids to have a local school.

2/8/2006

This is from a director.

The Lake Chairman received great news the other day. In a meeting with ADEM officials, it was relayed that the D'Olive Creek Watershed Assessment will begin in October of this year. This is a positive step in documenting problems and determining methods needed in the watershed to limit existing problems and prevent future impacts to the lake. This assessment will be used to develop a Watershed Management Plan that can be adopted by ADEM and other authorities to manage outside development, future land uses, and existing problem sites in a way that leads to better water quality in the long term. The Assessment t akes two years to complete. This was accomplished by working together with local government officials, federal and state agencies, and other elected officials in a coordinated effort. This is only the beginning of that work and many more things are being discussed and will be brought forward as this effort continues. This is evidence of a firm commitment from many people in government to help us with our lake problem. They will be commended for their efforts in the upcoming Spectrum.

2/8/2006

I have been told that Sager has a regular "Suthun Ease" column from now on in the Spectrum !! I also have heard many people insulted by his written garbage.  Some have said that if he thinks we are so dumb why did he move here??  Well, that's easy to answer: to control the place  or attempt to !!

2/8/2006

It has been almost a week now since Ms. Lieb was appointed a member of the Board of Lake Forest.  Numerous questions have been asked about her qualifications but there have been no answers.  Does that mean that she has NO QUALIFICATIONS or that they remain a SECRET - so much for the much publicized communications of the SLATE OF FIVE. I would love to hear what their achievements have been so far or are they SECRET too.

The person appointed to fill the vacant position on the board is Janet Lieb.  As I understand it, she is the ex-wife of George Lieb.  Carl asked the question "what were they?", referring to Henry's statement that “Ms Lieb’s qualifications best met the needs of the board.”.  I believe that Ms. Lieb is one of the people that the previous board instructed the attorney to sue for libel.  Perhaps that explains it.  Now was that selection sending a message or what!!!  Watching the performance of the Slate of Five is better than watching professional wrestling!!!

Did you see the story in today's paper about the Baldwin Co. Board of Education thinking of building an elementary school in Lake Forest?  What do you think of that idea?  If I had elementary age children, it might be nice to have a school right here in the community.  On the other hand, since we have no sidewalks, would they be walking to school in the street?

Does having a school built next door to your house raise your property value or lower it?  I don't know.

The property that they were talking about belongs to Friday Construction and the new school would be right next to their new development.  Have they cut back on their development plans?  Does Friday want to unload that piece?  Will the county pay them enough to make a profit?

The school superintendent said that the story has nothing to do with Daphne thinking about setting up their own school system.  Yeah.  Right.  Sure.  I believe you.  ;)

In the story, Gus Palumbo said he thought that a Daphne school system would raise taxes.  I know another State representative who says that the tax money coming from Daphne and being sent to the county is a big chunk.  Perhaps we should wait for the report of the study.

What do you think of all this?

This one is not referring to your neighborhood webmaster. ;)

Behind their "Improvements" and smiles are pure and simple evil. They found that negative tactics did not work so now they pretend to be sweet and interested in open communication. By the way, just what are the credentials of Ms. Lieb other than having a husband who was arrested for domestic violence?  And isn't it intersting that the name Lieb is so closely associated with the controversy over the Dox!

I don't believe Ms. Lieb has a husband.

If i adopt a median, does that mean you WON"T put a sidewalk through it? also: Is that why there are red x's on some trees in some lake forest medians?

Looking for the new website,,,,October was a long time ago guys! What's happening! Just tried to read the Spectrum which arrived unusually early! Where's the Garden Club and Women's Club news? Where's the LF Women golfers news and the Senior Golfers?  Just because the Board cannot bully these groups they did not print their news!  Recipes? Really! Please! That mailbox is nice but out of my reach, maybe next year! The Improvement Committee has ousted many longstanding groups. There is a way to condense these big articles!  Print it like a regular newspaper, all the same print!  Get professional!  I want to email the board members but the addresses are not published.  We need the email addresses of all on the board, they should be public information, their phone numbers are!  That foolish article on Page 9, we can do without such stupidness!  Again, English is our language here in the South.

I will be happy to publish the news from the Garden Club, Women's Club and the rest.  Just send them in. ;)

What is with the Red X's on trees in Lake Forest medians? Are they really going to build a damn sidewalk?

This message came in without a name and as a rule I will not publish any submissions that do not have the name.  However, in this case the submission did not appear to be offensive to anyone and a valid question, so I made an exception.  However, this is an exception to the rule.  There will be few of those.  Also, there have been numerous submissions about one particular employee.  Those kind of complaints should go to management.  They will not be printed here.

First, THANK YOU, to those members who wrote in to this web site extolling my credentials as a candidate.  No other announced candidate received such glowing accolades.  I am humbly appreciative of your support.  Also, THANK YOU to those who asked me in person why the board (who is supposedly elected to represent the members) did not automatically appoint me to the vacancy seeing that I was the next highest vote recipient at the October election.  I wonder also.  Another THANK YOU to those employees of Lake Forest who expressed their disappointment that I had not been selected.  I certainly hope that this will not create a “witch hunt.”

I received my “official” letter from our esteemed President informing me that I had not been selected for the vacancy.  In it, he stated, “Ms Lieb’s qualifications best met the needs of the board.”  My question is what were they???  Willie Roberson and I presented our written biographies and vision for Lake Forest.  They were published on the web site, in the Sprectrum, and in the ballot.  Jim Ethington has applied previously for a vacancy, but did not have the gumption to place his name, qualifications and vision on the October ballot.  I do remember his attack speech at the October meeting.  Ms Lieb appeared from nowhere and has the appointment.  Curious.  As one comment on the web said, “none of the above” was she set up for the appointment?  Let me suggest that when future vacancies occur, the candidates be identified in the official board communications and include their biographies and vision for our community.

I will continue to monitor the proceedings of our board and will submit, under my name, comments on meetings.

How Interesting! Our illustrious new board member, who of course received no votes by the membership because her nomination was strictly recruited by the Slate of Five rather than by the membership, is the wife of George Lieb recently arrested for domestic violence. What an illustrious addition to the board of Lake Forest. Keep it up, Slate of Five! You have done great so far!!! Cronyism to the the hilt!!!!!!!!

Occasionally we receive inquiries from readers as to who the players are in the Grapevine.  Although most people probably know who the Webmaster is, a link has been added to provide some information to those who do not.

It appears the board member, John Peterson, took exception to comments made by the Webmaster yesterday.  Since his submission and my response are so long, they have been added as a link from here.

On Thursday the board voted to fire Jay Ross, in the meantime should there be a need for legal action, we have no attorney.  The board could not understand why the payroll went up and down by months, it was then pointed out that Feb has 4 weeks and March has 5. Henry said that made a lot of sense.

Regarding the special meeting of February 1st.

They held an "Executive Session" to interview the board candidates, my understanding is they picked Mrs. George Lieb?  Wonder how that came about?  And how does interviewing candidates need to be a closed meeting?

2/4/2006

I went by the Daphne Justice Center to pick up a copy of the police report pertaining to an alleged  Domestic Violence charge involving George Lieb.  I was told that it would take a subpoena to get it because it involved a minor.

The above submission came in yesterday.  This sad story brings up a point about "perceptions".  I have often argued that the truth was more important than the perception, but events have proven that sometimes the perception wins out.  Last year Lieb, Dubose and others went to great lengths to portray the teen center as a nest of drugs, alcohol, and all sorts of other evils.  Yet, the facts never supported those charges and, in fact, every adult that had been involved with the club reported that the kids were well behaved and having fun.  Unfortunately, some members of the board and the association took actions based on the perception, not the truth.  George and friends claimed that there was some mischief taking place at the teen center involving kids and a few months later he is arrested for Domestic Violence reportedly involving a minor.  What perception does that create for you?

At the annual meeting, Toni Fassbender thanked George Lieb for having put together the Slate of Five which mounted a successful campaign for the Board of Directors.  Last night, the Board of Directors appointed Mrs. George Lieb to fill the first vacant position on the board.  You can make up your own jokes as to what the board can do if they ever have any rowdy children at one of their meetings. What perception does that appointment create for you?    Do you suppose that if George, himself, were not having such a difficult time now, that he might have been the one appointed.  The perception here is one of the Board of Directors distributing a little patronage.  One member wrote about the vote, "This was simply a vote of none of the above."  This was in reference to the controversy surrounding the other candidates for the position.  These kinds of actions and statements may produce a "perception" of this board and its Slate of Five.  It may be one of taking the easy way out.  It may be a perception of a board lacking character.   Let's hope that the truth and the perception are not the same.

I enjoyed the submissions re Sager.  I could not force myself to read the whole piece.  The guy is a blowhard and full of himself.  After all, he came here from New Jersey, home to Tony Soprano.  I can hope that the more that gets published, the louder and more frequent the responses will be against him

Somebody tell us what happened at the meeting.

To the "cap't of the lake",

It's official--  English is the official language of Alabama !

2/3/2006

I was wondering if anyone besides myself finds the ramblings of Sager (aka cap't of the lake, capt. Mike, capt. pontoon, and so on) insulting?  He thinks he lives on a Hee Haw set with a bunch of idiots and we are his entertainment ! The "Suthern - Ease" stuff is out of line, he has lived here for a year or so, and continues to write these silly, ignorant articles.  How can the media chairman approve them for the Spectrum. I love the reference to trollops at every port Cap't Mike docks his pontoon boat at-  yell, "lay say lay bon-ton roo-lay" !   What church shouts that from the pulpit???

Did you read the garbage in the new Spectrum?? He'sssss BAaaaccckkkk!

Aside from Sager's silly stuff, there were some pretty good pieces in the Spectrum.  The "Why I moved to Lake Forest' stories of Clara Street and Rebecca Trosclair are nice.  Kenneth Eggers wrote a good report on his area.  The new mailbox idea is a stretch.  I don't see many running out to buy one.  Henry's report was short and sweet and not bad.  Sager could take a lead from him and reduce some of his hot air.  It was interesting to see the handicapped child story that's been circulating the Internet make the paper.  It's a good story that's been around for many years.

George Lieb, the man that accused the dox of corrupting the children of lake forest, causing villains to attack his house, allowing too many cars to pass by his house at night, and leading lake forest to utter financial ruin, was arrested on January 10th for domestic violence. A quote from Mr. Lieb, "I just don't want it down the street from my house", now we see why.  Congratulations to the slate of five for guaranteeing him that the clubs near his house would stay closed at night.

You know Socrates was accused of corrupting the youth and put to death for it.  We've really improved a lot haven't we?  Maybe in a few hundred years those young men, that ran the dox, too will be honored for their contribution to the youth and society, as they deserve.

Don't forget to attend the special meeting of the board tonight.

How interesting that they discontinued printing the past due list of members in the Spectrum this month!  Could it be that the board wants to protect their good friend Ben Cricket?

Last year the Improvement Committee suggested that the Spectrum was a marketing tool that should promote Lake Forest.  They were concerned that including the Delinquent List was a negative.  The issue was discussed at a meeting of the board.  It was pointed out that the list had helped in our collection efforts but perhaps it could be printed at some other interval than once a month.  The idea was bounced around to consider publishing the list on a quarterly basis instead.  That may be what they are planning to do.  It was reported that Ben had paid his account up in order to attend the last stated meeting.  That has not been verified.

However, this posting brings up a story that should generate a little chuckle out here on the web.   "Mr. Cricket" submitted his resume for the general manager's position!!!  That is about the second funniest thing I've heard all day!

Some of you may remember that George Lieb and his neighbor, Mike Dubose, spent much of last year smearing the teen center and the former president.  They wandered the Internet reading teenage band websites looking for ammunition to help in their cause to close the kids' center.  Almost everything they claimed was a distortion of the facts, if not out and out lies.  They even brought in a police report from Silverhill that had absolutely nothing to do with Lake Forest, but claimed that the same thing was going on here.  They claimed that the club was a great liability to the association.  None of it was true.  In fact, the Board of Directors had opinions from both the attorney and the insurance company that all was well with the club.  The board even arranged for a police officer to attend the events at the club and the officers who had the duty all said that the teenagers were well behaved and the club was a benefit to the community.  And yet, these two heroes would not be dissuaded from their mission to sink the club and the board.  At the annual meeting, the former president pointed out at great length what the true facts were and that these men were liars.  Those who attended the meeting may remember that candidate, Toni Fassbender, stood up and thanked George Lieb for putting together the Slate of Five to run for the Board of Directors.

Now that your memory has been refreshed, allow me to quote from the Baldwin Press Register for Wednesday, February 1, 2006.

"Jan. 9, Third-degree domestic violence was reported at a residence on Country Club Drive."

"Jan. 10, George E. Lieb, no age available, of Daphne was charged with third-degree domestic violence.  The arrest was made at the Daphne Justice Center."

If the above charges are true, then our sympathy goes out to Lieb's family.  We are not particularly surprised because Lieb, himself, had reported confrontations with kids at the club last year.  It looks like he was the one doing the confronting.  You've heard the expression, "What goes around comes around."  Well, George, it's back.  One woman sent her opinion today, which I can't print, but it went something like this. "If I were his wife, I would beat the @#!&% out of the short, fat, lying @#!&% @%$^& @#$@^.
